Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take a State exam after the NAERMC exam?

No. Florida does not offer its own mold exam. The State only recognizes approved
exams, and NAERMC is one of them.
Once you pass our exam, there is no additional training or testing required — you
simply apply to the State for your license.

We offer the study materials in Spanish, and you can choose to take the exam in Spanish.  But the actual class is taught in English.   People who understand some English but prefer to study and take the exam in Spanish do not have trouble passing the exam.

We have a very high first-time pass rate — over 90%.
If you don’t pass on your first attempt, we include one free retake, which can be
taken at any of our regularly scheduled exam dates.
Before retaking the exam, we strongly recommend reviewing the online study
materials. Most people pass the second time without difficulty because they know
what to expect.

  • Online review class: One full day, from 9:30 AM to approximately 5:00 PM, including the exam time.
  • In-person class: Two full days, typically 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM each day.

Please double-check your specific location and date for exact hours.

Yes. Mold Assessor and Mold Remediator licenses are individual licenses and do not license a business (unlike a General Contractor license).
Florida requires that there be a licensed and insured individual responsible for the job and present as required.

In Florida, there is no such thing as a licensed mold company. Licenses are issued only to individuals. Businesses operate by employing or contracting with licensed Mold Assessors or Mold Remediators. The license itself does not qualify the business.

Yes. During the class, we spend about one full hour going section-by-section through the application and explaining exactly how to complete it. The application is not difficult — but it is confusing.

If the State finds an issue, they send you a deficiency notice, giving you the opportunity to correct the problem and resubmit. The good news is that the State’s review process is quite fast. At the time of this writing, the DBPR is processing applications in just a few weeks, and deficiency resubmissions often take only a few additional days.

Do I need a college degree? No college degree is required. In addition to the required training and exam, you must document work experience:

  • No college degree: 4 years of related work experience (high school diploma required*), or
  • 2+ years of higher education in science, engineering, or architecture: only 1 year of related work experience is required.

Work experience is documented as part of the application, which we fully explain during the class.

* You don’t have to produce your high school diploma, this is just a check mark. However, if you are applying with higher education, then you need to submit your transcripts.

The State defines 15 jobs over a 12 month period as the equivalent of 1 year experience.  There is a page in the application with 15 blank numbered lines.  You fill out a simple list of 15 jobs over a year to demonstrate that 1 year of experience.  The jobs must be related to Mold Assessment or Mold Remediation and be over 10 sq feet.   We fully explain how to fill this out during the class.  If you’ve been actively working in a related field for at least 4 years (or 1 with the higher education), then usually  there is no issue to qualify.

Yes, there is no requirement to live in Florida or have a business in Florida. Additionally, your work experience and your education do not have to be from Florida.
